The Vatican Television Center (CTV) was instituted by John Paul II in 1983. It is a television production center with the task of filming the activities of the Holy Father and the Holy See and preserving them in an archive.
The Vatican Television Center places these images at the disposal of lay and Catholic television stations all over the world who request them.
In addition to filming and live coverage of papal audiences, visits and celebrations, the Vatican Television Center produces a weekly feature programme “Octava Dies” and, in collaboration with Vatican Radio, daily video newscasts on principal Vatican events.

Television filming
Every week CTV furnishes live coverage of the Pope’s Angelus (Sunday), and his General Audience (Wednesday) in addition to all the Holy Father’s public celebrations: Masses, canonizations, and special events.
Also other special papal audiences and activities are filmed and made available:
audiences to political personalities, representatives of lay and religious institutions from all over the world, groups of pilgrims.
Live coverage
CTV films and transmits live more than 200 events a year. Live coverage is rebroadcast by many Catholic television stations worldwide, as well as public and private television stations that make the request.
Production: Video-news and Documentaries
The Vatican Television Center has produced numerous documentaries over the years on the pontificate of John Paul II, on the Vatican, the Roman Basilicas and currently on Benedict XVI. CTV documentaries are distributed exclusively by HDH Communications. Since 1998 CTV features the weekly programme “Octava Dies” with reports on the activities of the Pope and the Holy See, rebroadcast by Italian and foreign Catholic television stations. Since 2007, in collaboration with Vatican Radio, CTV produces daily video newscasts on the principal Vatican events. The video-news, thanks to an entirely digital system of production and distribution, is currently transmitted through the site and web-TV of Vatican Radio, “The Vatican” channel on YouTube, and the H20 News website.
Archive
CTV has the largest television archive in the world on John Paul II and Benedict XVI, with more than 16,000 cassettes equivalent to 8,000 hours of footing. Television stations and producers from all over the world tap into the archive. Private individuals can request recordings of events on DVD support.
